Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh: Lawyers in Sambhal district staged a protest on Monday against the arrest of Zafar Ali, president of the Jama Masjid Management Committee and a senior lawyer. Ali was taken into custody on Sunday in connection with the violence that erupted on November 24 last year, according to police officials.

The protestors, comprising members of the local bar association, alleged that Ali’s arrest was politically motivated and aimed at preventing him from testifying before a judicial commission investigating the incident.

"His arrest raises serious concerns about an attempt to silence key witnesses in the probe," a protesting lawyer stated.

Meanwhile, police sources maintained that Ali was arrested based on evidence linking him to the previous year’s unrest. "His involvement in the November 24 violence was established during the investigation," an official said.

The arrest has sparked tensions within the legal community, with demands for Ali’s immediate release and assurances of judicial transparency. The case is likely to gain further traction as legal and political stakeholders continue to weigh in.
