New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Wednesday arrived at Parliament in a hydrogen-powered vehicle, underscoring the government's push for green energy and sustainable transportation. The vehicle, named Mirai, is a Japanese term meaning "future," symbolizing the shift towards clean fuel alternatives.
Speaking on the occasion, Gadkari said, "The name of this car is 'Mirai', which is a Japanese word meaning 'future'. Fuel of our future is hydrogen. At present, we are a country that imports energy; in the future, we will become a country exporting energy."
Gadkari has been a strong advocate for alternative fuels, including hydrogen, ethanol, and electric vehicles, as part of India's strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and cut carbon emissions. The use of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) is being explored as a key solution for achieving energy self-sufficiency and sustainability.
India is currently investing in green hydrogen production, with policies aimed at encouraging its use in industries and transportation. The minister’s move to use a hydrogen-powered car is seen as a symbolic step towards promoting the adoption of this futuristic technology in the country.
