In a landmark ruling, the Siliguri Court has sentenced MD Abbas to death for his involvement in the rape and murder of a minor. The verdict is a significant development in a case that has drawn considerable attention due to its severity.
Special Public Prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee explained that the prosecution had sought the death penalty, emphasizing the gravity of the crime. He argued that the case qualified as one of the "rarest of the rare" due to the heinous nature of the offense. The court agreed, awarding the death sentence under Section 302 for murder and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
In addition to the death penalty, the court has imposed a seven-year prison term for other related charges. The victim’s family has been granted Rs 10 lakh in compensation, reflecting the court’s recognition of the profound impact on the family.
