BY A STAFF REPORTER: Overnight shootings in the Guinea-Bissau capital continued into the morning. The circumstances of the shooting are still unclear. The first gunshots were heard just after midnight in the Antula area on the outskirts of the capital.
Military vehicles were on the streets Friday morning and residents commuted to work and school. Gunshots could be heard in the morning as well but were less frequent than at night.
There have been at least 10 coup attempts in Guinea-Bissau since independence from Portugal in 1974. Only one democratically elected president has served office in the West African country south of Senegal.
