New Delhi: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs) for eight major capital acquisition proposals totaling more than ₹54,000 crore. These acquisitions aim to bolster the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces through advanced equipment and technological upgrades.

Among the key approvals, the Indian Army will procure a new 1350 HP engine to upgrade the existing 1000 HP engine of the T-90 tanks. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated that this enhancement will significantly improve the battlefield mobility of these tanks, particularly in high-altitude areas, by increasing their power-to-weight ratio.

The T-90 tanks are a crucial part of India's armored fleet, and their improved mobility will provide a strategic advantage in challenging terrains such as the northern borders. The move is in line with the government’s efforts to modernize the armed forces and enhance indigenous defense production.

The DAC's approvals also reflect India's commitment to strengthening self-reliance in defense manufacturing under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. The acquisition process will now move forward to the next stage, including finalizing contracts with domestic defense manufacturers and suppliers.
