GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised concerns over the financial crisis faced by Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), stating that the company has been incurring losses of around ₹500 crore annually for the past two years and is heavily reliant on bank loans to sustain operations.

Speaking about the crisis, Sarma said, “This organization has made a loss in the last two years, around ₹500 crore annually, so they are now heavily dependent on bank loans. A lot of money has been borrowed from banks. So, obviously, the project is having difficulty.”

BCPL is a joint venture where GAIL (India) Limited holds a 70% stake, while the remaining 30% equity is equally shared by the Government of Assam, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), and Oil India Limited (OIL).

The Assam CM emphasized the need to address the issue before it worsens. “We have to find some solution to take this project out of the financial crisis because if they keep on borrowing from banks, then they will face a major problem in the days to come. We have to think of a permanent solution,” he added.

The financial instability of BCPL, a key player in Assam’s petrochemical sector, could have broader economic implications. The state government and stakeholders are now expected to explore viable strategies to ensure the company’s long-term sustainability.
