BY A STAFF REPORTER: Ramakrishna Math is a monastic community. Ramakrishna Math, established by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in 1886, mainly works for spiritual training and the education of the Sangha. Swami Vivekananda established the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897. It is a public welfare organization. Ramakrishna Math and Mission is mainly for establishing the ideal of human service in the knowledge of God, irrespective of caste-religion, by bringing a wave of new inspiration in the soul of the Indian nation. The journey of Ramakrishna Mission started with three main programs namely religion, service and education.
After Ramakrishnadev's demise, Swamiji proposed the formation of the Ramakrishna Mission Association at a meeting of Ramakrishnadev's devotees held at Balaram Bose's residence in Calcutta. Swamiji himself drafted the proposal and regulations for the formation of the mission. The mission was officially registered on May 4, 1909, at the British Government Office.
Ramakrishna Math got legal recognition in 1909. The mission was heavily involved in social welfare activities from the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Proclamation of the greatness of human service, provision of food, clothing and shelter for students and propagation of Hinduism were the main tasks of the Ramakrishna Mission.
The first president of the Ramakrishna Mission was Swami Brahmananda. Although established under the shelter of Hindu religion and tradition, East and West have met in one. The objectives of this mission were founded on the ideals of faith in God and the ideals of human service and man-making irrespective of caste, creed and caste. In the Ramakrishna Mission ideals of Vedanta and idolatry are recognized.
