After winning the World Cup in 1950, Uruguay was the favorite in this semi-final match against Hungary. Hungary were unbeaten in 30 matches and Uruguay, on the other hand had never lost a World Cup match before. Hungary beat Uruguay 1-0 to advance at half-time. But the South Americans came back strongly into the match with Juan Hohberg's equaliser. But then, Hungary scored three goals and Uruguay manage to score just one goal in the memorable match. Despite that, Hungary has not been able to maintain their dominance in world football for a long time.
