New Delhi – In a significant move to enhance the Indian Air Force's operational capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth Rs 2,385.36 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru. The agreement includes the acquisition of state-of-the-art Electronic Warfare (EW) Suites, aircraft modification kits, and their integration onto Mi-17 V5 helicopters.
The contract was signed in Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and falls under the 'Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured)' category. This is part of the government's continued push towards self-reliance in defence technology under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
The EW suites will significantly enhance the survivability of Mi-17 V5 helicopters by providing effective electronic countermeasures against adversary threats during missions. The system is designed to detect, intercept, and jam enemy radar and communication systems, ensuring mission success and crew safety in hostile environments.
The package also includes aircraft modification kits and associated ground support equipment required for seamless integration and operation of the new systems.
