Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan addressed the tragic rape and murder case at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, urging a collective societal response beyond government action. He questioned the conscience of society, asking, "What is the duty of each one of us individually? How do we treat women in our own family? Why should women outside the family be treated differently?"
The Governor emphasized that while the government has a duty to act, the law alone is not a complete solution. "We need a long-term program to create awareness in our society... Women must be treated with dignity and respect," he stated, calling for social sanctions and broader societal engagement to address the deep-rooted issues of gender inequality and violence against women
