By a Staff Reporter: There were two separate territories in Pakistan divided on the basis of religion. West Pakistan and East Pakistan. And the criteria of language were also changed in this land division. While the main language of West Pakistan was Urdu, the main language of East Pakistan was Bengali. The ruling Pakistan wanted to convert East Pakistan to Urdu as well. But the demand of East Pakistan was only one; Bengali should be given the status of national language. Sahid Diwas movement started around this history.
On February 21, 1952, when the barbaric police fired on the agitating students and social activists, Rafiq, Salam, Abdul Jabbar, Shafiul, Barkat and many other youths were martyred. This day has since been known as Shahid Diwas.
Later, however, on October 21, 2010, Bangladesh brought a proposal to observe the International Mother Language Day on February 21 every year at the 65th session of the United Nations, which was unanimously accepted.
