BY A STAFF REPORTER: Diwali means full of lights. Houses are decorated with earthen lamps and different kinds of lights. But do you know that there are some special rules for lighting the lamp? According to Vastu Shastra, one should never light a lamp in one place of the house on Diwali. If not, its adverse effects are seen. So where to put the lamp? According to one Shastra, one should not light the lamp in the south direction on Diwali even by mistake. Because, in Vastushastra, the south direction is considered as the direction of Yamaraj. The practice of worshiping Yamraj on Narak Chaturdashi, a day before Diwali, has been going on since ancient times. So one should not light the lamp in the south direction on Diwali. But other days of the year can be given.
In Hindu scriptures, it is believed that on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi, Yamaraj comes to earth and determines the time of a person's death. This is why lamps should not be lit on the south side of the house on the two days of Diwali. So according to astrology, it is auspicious to light a lamp dedicated to Yamaraj to avoid untimely death, but this lamp should not be placed in south direction even by mistake.
