But why? Recently there was a spurt of new hawkers encroaching on roads along the Lake area. Illegal encroachment by hawkers have led to several fatal accidents and people complained that there are no footpath to walk forcing them to come on the road. The death of a young school student forced opened the debate of whether too many hawkers have taken up space on the footpaths of Kolkata. When illegal hawkers started encroaching on footpaths of Rabindra Sarovar lake, residents wrote to commissioner of police and informed the local police station. Police cleared the illegal encroachment and ensured that the hawkers did not return the area. Residents claimed that the important area at the entrance of Rabindra Sarobar Lake in front of the Calcutta Rowing Club is now free from hawkers.
