New Delhi | Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday accused the West Bengal government of delaying the fencing of 450 km along the international border, alleging that its actions are enabling infiltration. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, Shah highlighted concerns over national security and border management.
“The fencing work of 450 km is pending because the West Bengal government is not giving land for it. Whenever the process of fencing is done, the ruling party workers indulge in hooliganism and religious sloganeering. The fencing work of 450 km of border has not been completed because the West Bengal government is showing mercy to the infiltrators,” Shah stated.
The remarks sparked sharp reactions from opposition benches, with Trinamool Congress leaders rejecting the claims and accusing the central government of politicizing border security.
The issue of illegal immigration has remained a contentious subject between the Centre and the West Bengal government, with the BJP repeatedly accusing the state administration of being lenient toward infiltrators. The debate is expected to intensify as discussions on the bill continue in Parliament.
