Chennai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has approached the Madras High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail, following a police notice issued in connection with a recent satirical performance.

Defending Kamra, advocate V Suresh stated, “Kunal Kamra is a well-known comedian whose forte is satire. He uses songs and jokes to critique politicians and those in power. This particular episode was recorded in February and uploaded on March 23.”

Kamra received a notice from Khar police station on March 24, but he was not in Mumbai at the time, as he was in Tamil Nadu for professional commitments. According to Suresh, Kamra responded to the notice, requesting to appear before the police on April 2, but this request was rejected by authorities.

The case has sparked a debate over artistic freedom and legal scrutiny, with supporters arguing that political satire should not be criminalized, while critics insist on accountability for public statements. Kamra has faced legal action multiple times in the past for his outspoken views.
