Mumbai, Maharashtra | Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday dismissed opposition allegations that they were not allowed to speak in the House, asserting that they chose to protest instead of engaging in meaningful discussions.

“They should have participated in the discussion on the Constitution. Those who talk about democracy don’t even show up when such discussions take place—so what right do they have to complain about not being heard?” Shinde remarked.

He further accused the opposition of preferring demonstrations over deliberations. “The opposition only enjoys staging protests on the steps of the House instead of engaging in real discussions,” he added.

His comments come amid heightened political tensions in Maharashtra, with opposition parties claiming their voices are being stifled in the assembly. However, the government maintains that ample opportunities for debate exist and that constructive participation is necessary for a functioning democracy.
