New Delhi | The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016, has emerged as a transformative initiative, delivering clean cooking fuel to millions of underprivileged households across India. By providing free gas connections, cylinders, and stoves, the scheme has helped reduce reliance on hazardous traditional fuels such as wood and cow dung.
The initiative has significantly improved indoor air quality and health conditions, particularly benefiting women who previously endured smoke-related ailments from open-fire cooking. Moreover, it has reduced the drudgery of collecting firewood, allowing women more time for education, work, and other productive activities.
The government has consistently expanded the scheme, with additional subsidies and refills provided to ensure sustained adoption of LPG. As a result, Ujjwala Yojana has not only enhanced household well-being but also contributed to India's broader environmental and energy goals.
With millions of beneficiaries and ongoing efforts to widen its reach, PMUY continues to play a crucial role in promoting clean energy access and improving the quality of life for India’s rural poor.
