High-profile Calgary businessman Riaz Mamdani has been charged with domestic assault in connection with an incident at his Mount Royal home last year.
Mamdani was charged Nov. 28 with common assault in connection with an incident that day involving his female partner.
He was not taken into custody by police and was issued a promise to appear in court for Dec. 9.
“The complainant’s allegations against Mr. Mamdani are unfounded and part of a campaign to obtain a financial windfall from the breakdown of a casual personal relationship,” His defense counsel Cory Wilson said in the written statement.
Mamdani is mostly known as CEO of Strategic Group, the Calgary-based company that had more than 50 commercial properties placed in receivership in January 2020 after a Court of Queen’s Bench judge rejected the company’s restructuring plan.
