Now with the onset of freezing winter's in Calgary, the CHINOOKS have become such a reality for me that I forget that the rest of the world may not be well versed in this unique Weather Phenomenon.
Now What Are The CHINOOKS
Also known as the Foehn Winds to the rest of the world, are a type of dry warm wind 🍃 travelling down the downward slope of a mountain and when the warm air has lost it's moisture.
In Canada the winds occur on the Pacific Coast, cool as they blow up the Canadian Rockies and then warm significantly as they drop down the eastern slopes freeing the Calgarians for a few Blissful moments from the winters icy grasp. One of the most striking feature of this interior Weather system is the Chinook Arch. To those unfamiliar with it, The Chinook Arch at times look like a threatening Storm cloud. They can also create stunning sunrises and sunsets. Typically the colors will change throughout the day, starting with yellow, orange, red and pink shades & orange/yellow hues just before Sun 🌞 sets.
It's a nature's gift to Calgary. Most of us Albertans/Calgarians welcome the warm winds in subzero temperatures with open arms.
So to sum it all up being a Calgarian and living in the frigid winters with temperatures hovering around Negative -30 to Negative -40 degrees we believe the CHINOOKS are a blessing from above to give us a little respite we all crave for.
