Kolkata, India – A renewed era of China-India friendship is unfolding, as highlighted in a recent media briefing held by the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata. Since his arrival in June, the Consul General has actively engaged with media representatives to foster stronger cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Cultural and Educational Collaborations
In April last year, a delegation of scholars and artists retraced the footsteps of Rabindranath Tagore in China, participating in commemorative events across Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Engaging with students, they recited Tagore’s poetry, sang his songs, and performed his dances, reigniting cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Furthering these efforts, Visva Bharati University, founded by Tagore, hosted an international conference on his philosophy of education. Led by Professor Dong Youcheng, Chinese scholars visited India, marking the first post-pandemic academic engagement between the two countries. Their visit coincided with Durga Puja, allowing them to experience Kolkata’s grand festivities firsthand.

Honoring the India Medical Mission to China
The deep-rooted China-India friendship was also celebrated through the India Medical Mission Memorial, honoring Indian doctors who aided China in 1938. The Consulate has actively promoted this legacy, supporting annual commemorations in August and December and encouraging media coverage of these historic ties.
Youth and Sports Exchanges
Youth exchanges remain a key highlight, with delegations from East India visiting Yunnan for the China-South Asia Cooperation Forum. Musicians from Northeast India also traveled to Yunnan, showcasing their cultural heritage through performances in ethnic villages and museums. Young diplomats from China engaged with Indian students in discussions on cross-cultural ties, strengthening generational bonds.
In the realm of sports, a cricket coach was sent to Shanghai for trial training, creating an opportunity for Chinese youth to learn more about India’s favorite sport. Such initiatives aim to foster deeper mutual understanding between young people.

Film, Art, and Emerging Technology
Cinema continues to serve as a bridge between the two cultures. Earlier this year, six Chinese children’s films were screened at the Kolkata International Children's Film Festival, receiving positive responses. The Consulate also encouraged the exchange of artistic talent, inviting Bengali writers to China.
Beyond cultural initiatives, discussions on China’s advancements in artificial intelligence, energy transformation, and quantum technology were also emphasized as key areas of collaboration. With China's push towards innovation in fields like new energy vehicles and 6G, opportunities for technological cooperation between the two countries are set to expand.
