BY A STAFF REPORTER: At least 100 people were killed and 150 others injured in a fire at a wedding ceremony in Hamdania district of Iraq's Nineveh province.

Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq said 113 deaths had been confirmed.

According to the local civil defence, the fire broke out in a major event hall in the northeast after fireworks were lit during the festival. Firefighters are scrambling over the building's charred ruins and searching for survivors.

According to preliminary information, the building is made of highly flammable construction materials, which has caused rapid collapse. Iraq's federal authorities and Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region have sent ambulances and medical personnel to the scene.
