BY A STAFF REPORTER: German and World Cup football legend Franz Beckenbauer has died at the age of 78. The extraordinarily talented defender has won several trophies and honours throughout his illustrious career, including a World Cup and two Ballon d'Or awards for West Germany as a player and manager. He was also famous for creating his role as a sweeper — sitting a little behind his team's defensive line. Former England striker Gary Lineker described Beckenbauer as "one of the best in our sport".

Former England striker Gary Lineker said: "I am very sad to hear that Franz Beckenbauer has passed away. Der Kaiser was the most beautiful of the footballers who won it with grace and charm. "
