BY A STAFF REPORTER: In a controversial statement, West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday alleged that Shahjahan Sheikh's arrest is an image-saving strategy and efforts are being made to save him.
Moreover, he marked Shahjahan Sheikh's arrest as a 'political arrest'. He further stated that all the sections imposed against him are bailable. Besides, he has not been charged for alleged atrocities against the women of Sandeshkhali. Majumdar termed this as a 'face-saving' activity. Sukanta also demanded for Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation's probe into the case and asserted that he should be imprisoned in the Tihar Jail.
The statement comes after the arrest of controversial TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh by West Bengal Police in the Minakhan area of North 24 Parganas. He has been awarded 10-day custody by a local court in Basirhat. Furthermore, he has been suspended by the TMC for six years.
A village located in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, Sandeshkhali is witnessing significant clashes and violence following allegations of systematic sexual exploitations and land-grabbing committed by TMC leaders, Shahjahan Sheikh, Shibu Hazara and Uttam Sardar. Shahjahan Sheikh remained absconding since 5th January after an ED team was attacked by a large mob while conducting raids at Shahjahan's residence.
