BY A STAFF REPORTER: In a recent development, the government of India on Tuesday began discussions regarding the development of military as well as civilian airports for beginning aircraft operations in the Minicoy islands, Lakshadweep.

Amidst the controversy of Maldivian MPs' remarks, the government of India has decided to promote Lakshadweep tourism along with other Indian supporters. Now Lakshadweep's Minicoy Island may soon have an airfield operating commercial airplanes along with military jets.

According to the sources, the plan was suggested to the government earlier as well but was revived amidst the recent controversy and PM Modi's visit to the Lakshadweep islands. The Indian Coast Guard was the first among the forces to recommend the development of an Airstrip in the Minicoy Islands. Moreover, the Air Force would be heading the operations from Minicoy.
