Former President Donald Trump has made eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives a top priority in his administration, calling them “illegal” and “immoral.” Yet, his own media company, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which owns the Truth Social platform, has corporate governance policies that pledge to foster a “culture of diversity and inclusion.”
This contradiction highlights a long-standing pattern in Trump’s career. His 2000 book, The America We Deserve, praised diversity and tolerance, emphasizing that the president’s job was to “induce a greater tolerance for diversity.” Trump also cited his friendships with Black celebrities like Sean "Diddy" Combs and Sammy Sosa as shaping his views on American culture. “Anyone who really knows me knows that I hate intolerance and bigotry,” he wrote.

However, as a 2024 presidential candidate, Trump took a starkly different stance, vowing to dismantle DEI programs. Shortly after taking office, he signed an executive order eliminating DEI initiatives across the federal government. This week, a federal judge temporarily blocked parts of the order, but Trump’s administration continues to argue that DEI programs promote “preferential treatment” based on race and gender.
