BY A STAFF REPORTER: Swami Vivekananda was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, writer and religious teacher. Vivekananda was born into a noble Bengali Kayastha family in Calcutta. His real name was Narendranath Dutta. His father Vishwanath Dutta was an attorney in the Calcutta High Court. His mother Bhubaneswari Devi was a pious housewife.
Narendranath was interested in spirituality from an early age. Meditating in front of idols of gods and goddesses like Shiva, Rama, Sita and Mahavira Hanuman. He was fascinated by wandering ascetics and monks. Narendra was mischievous and restless as a child and his parents often had trouble controlling him. His mother said, "I prayed to Shiva for a son and he sent me one of his demons."
In 1871, at the age of eight, Narendranath Ishwarchandra was admitted to the Metropolitan Institution at Vidyasagar. He was an avid reader of various subjects including philosophy, religion, history, social science, art and literature. Narendranath Dutta was known for his extraordinary memory and fast reading ability.
